Vinicunca mountain, otherwise known as Rainbow mountain, is located in the Ausangate mountain region of Peru. There are several peaks but Ausangate is the highest mountain in the area, peaking at almost 21,000 ft. It is considered one of the most sacred mountain in Peru.
For someone who’s never been to South America and never been on a multi-day hike, it was daunting to prepare for the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. In retrospect, I wish I was even better prepared than I was so I want to share some tips on how to train and how to pack for the 4 day 3 night classic Inca Trail. While we were in Cusco acclimating to the high altitude, we did the Sacred Valley day trip. Sacred Valley is located about 500m (1500ft) lower than Cusco at 2900m (9514ft) so it’s a nice way to ease into the high altitude. Continue reading
