Where to Go Apple Picking on Long Island, New York
Long Island has beautiful farms where you can do some fun apple picking! This blog shows you the best orchards for apple picking on Long Island, New York and which ones are the best for families with kids.
Ah! It’s that time of the year again! As Labor Day comes around the corner it officially marks the beginning of fall in New York. I mean what’s there not to love about fall? With its cooler weather you can dress up in cute fall outfits while sipping on your pumpkin spice latte and prepare decorations for Halloween
One of New Yorkers’ favorite fall activities is to go apple picking, I mean it is a very New England thing to do after all! For me, after I moved to New York, I really felt like I was experiencing fall for the first time when I went apple picking with some locals.
Apple Picking is such a family friendly activity but you can certainly enjoy it without kids. Some orchards are more kids friendly whereas others definitely cater to adults.
Whether you live on Long Island or in Queens, you sure will find some fun orchards for Apple Picking this fall season. If you live in Manhattan, you can still venture out to the orchards in the Hudson Valley for some family fun.

What’s the Best Time For Apple Picking on Long Island, New York
In general apple picking on Long Island starts on or after Labor Day Weekend and goes to early November. So most of the farms are in full swing with apple picking and other fall festivities in September and October.
Depending on the orchard and the types of apple they have, you may still be able to do some apple picking in November, but you won’t find as many varieties of apple.
Since most farms on the Long Island are only open for apple picking on the weekends and weather can be unpredictable, you should always call the orchards or check their websites/ Facebook page ahead of time (like early in the morning) before you visit.
Most orchards are open between 10am to 4pm. You should definitely go a bit earlier and not have to rush before the orchards close.

Tips For Apple Picking Near New York City
- Call the orchards before you go: Sometimes the orchards have unexpected closure due to whatever reason, so always check before you go to avoid disappointment. Most orchards update information on their Facebook page
- Bring cash: Most orchards on Long Island are cash only. The ones that accept credit cards tend to charge a service charge.
- Don’t bring your own bag: Almost all the orchards require you to purchase a bag when you enter and they do not allow you to bring your own bag in case you sneak in an apple or 2…..or 10!
- What to wear: put on those cute fall outfits but also bring some sunscreen. Most orchards are closed when it rains so you bet you will be picking apples when it’s sunny. Also wear comfortable and closed toe shoes since the ground is uneven
- Pets: Some orchards allow dogs on leash whereas others don’t. Check my list of apple picking spots on Long Island below to see which ones allow pets
- Playgrounds: Not all apple picking orchards have a playground for kids. Some are more catered to adults with wine tasting whereas others are more family friendly. Check the list of orchards below to see which ones are best for kids.
- Be Courteous: It costs the farms a lot to maintain and organize these apple picking events. Be a kind person and don’t do anything you are not allowed to do (like don’t picnic if the orchards don’t allow it)
Without further ado, here is the list of fun apple picking orchards in Long Island New York.
